Eating banana peel isn’t that unheard of. Many civilizations not only eat the potassium-rich fruit, but also its skin.
Although not a common practice in the west, it’s not strange when you consider some of the beneficial nutrients that the flesh contains.
Certain Asian cultures eat the skin as it is considered to be high in carbohydrates as well as magnesium and potassium, and also contains some protein and fibre.
But those unwilling to try the less sweet skin of regular bananas might be interested to try the Mongee banana – which has an edible peel.
Created by a Japanese agricultural research company, the fruit – pronounced mon-gay (Japanese for incredible) – is made through an extreme freezing and thawing process.
D& T Farm are the people behind the wholly edible fruit and according to their website, Mongees are sweeter than their traditional counterpart, with up to give more grams of sugar per fruit. It also added that the peels don’t have a bitter taste as ordinary banana exteriors do.
First, scientists plant and grow banana trees in an environment kept at -60 degrees Celcius. Then, the team thaws and replants them. The change in temperature allows the plants to grow quickly, and leaves the fruit with a peel with a lettuce-like texture.
Sadly for us, we won’t be able to try it any time soon as production costs are so high, meaning it’s unlikely to be imported to the UK in the near future.
At the moment, only ten of them go on sale a week at the Okayama prefecture department store in Western Japan, averaging at a cost of £4 a piece.
Yup, you read that right – £4 for one banana.
So it might not quite make the cut for our five a day.
