Sweet-toothed vegan Londoners will no doubt have heard of Dough Society, the vegan brioche doughnut purveyors who have been trading at various markets for the past year or so.
Born of ‘a love of baking, a massive sweet tooth and a love of dirty American-style food’, Dough Society was started by husband and wife team Lauren and Ed, who started experimenting with doughnut recipes when they couldn’t find anyone selling what they were after.
Fans of the pair will be super excited to hear that they’re opening a permanent location this month – and it’s going to be a vegan coffee and doughnut shop. Yas kween!
We’re not talking some permanent (doughnut) hole in the wall – this is going to be a coffee shop with space for 35 bums to sit down, with an inclusive bathroom and on-site kitchen.
They’ll be serving 20 varieties of doughnut (gotta catch ’em all), as well as seasonal specials.
Plus, they’ll be cooking up vegan cheese toasties to satiate those savouries.
The pair also plan to offer brunch once they’re all settled in – and that involves doughnut French toast. Yeah, you read that right.
Dough Society coffee shop – all you need to know
11 Dispensary Lane, Hackney Central, E8 1FT.
The shop will open to the public on Wednesday 17 January.
So, did Lauren and Ed imagine they’d be opening their own coffee shop less than two years after first experimenting with dough?
‘Absolutely not!’ reveals Lauren, to metro.co.uk.
‘We always dreamed of having a coffee shop “one day” but had no idea we would end up with a coffee and doughnut shop so soon, let alone a vegan one!
‘A few friends pushed us to do a vegan fair at The Dogstar [in Brixton ]about 18 months ago and I was so nervous we wouldn’t sell anything at all.
‘We sold out of 100 doughnuts in under an hour and were kind of speechless. I think that’s when we realised there was a gap in the market and a lot of like-minded people after a dirty treat!’
And have they noticed a shift in the vegan scene in recent times?
‘It’s changed massively,’ Lauren says.
‘We are originally from Southampton so London was like a vegan mecca for us with so many options, but even in the last few years with veganism on the up it’s so much easier to find options, with Hackney seeming to be at the heart of it all.
‘There were already a few places in Hackney but with Hackney Downs Vegan Market and some epic savoury food businesses popping up recently it’s an exciting place to be.’
Oh, and to celebrate the opening of Hackney’s newest gem, Dough Society will be giving free doughnuts to the first 100 customers through the door on Saturday 20 January.
Keep an eye on the Dough Society Facebook for opening times.
See you down there, sugar!
