Before, during or after the meal: When to drink water?

01/5 When is the best time to drink water?

Combining water and meals together has always remained a debatable topic. While many argue that drinking water with meals doesn’t harm you in any way, many believe that the opposite is true. If you too wonder when is the best time to drink water- before, during or after the meal, read on till the end.

02/5 Before the meal

Even though the western culture links drinking water before meals to improve gastric health, Ayurveda denies it. When you think about food, your mouth automatically starts salivating and your stomach starts preparing the digestive juice in order to digest the food consumed. In such a situation, if you drink water right before eating, your saliva and digestive juices will get dissolved. Moreover, water gives a feeling of fullness which will make you eat less. Once the water is digested, you will again feel hungry in some time, which can cause excess eating. According to Ayurveda, you should have water at least 20-30 minutes before eating anything.

03/5 During the meal

This might come as a shock to you, but Ayurveda actually recommends drinking water while eating your food. This does not mean that you gulp down glasses of water while having your meals. You can have a few small sips in between your bites, as this will make the food tender and will help in breaking it down into smaller particles. This will further help in digestion and won’t strain your digestive system much.

04/5 After the meal

Drinking water after your meal should be avoided at all costs. Water diminishes the digestive fire as it acts as a coolant that can interrupt the digestive process. It also dilutes the digestive juices. Once you are done with your meal, wait for at least 30 minutes before sipping on some water. According to Ayurveda, gulping down water right after finishing food can also cause obesity in the long term. If you have eaten something spicy or too oily, then you are bound to feel thirsty right after a meal. In such a case, it is best to drink just 2-3 sips of lukewarm water.

05/5 Bottomline

Make sure you avoid drinking chilled water at any time during the day. Room temperature or lukewarm is recommended by Ayurveda to keep your gut healthy. You must also avoid pairing fizzy drinks or caffeinated beverages with your meals. Always sit down while drinking water and sip it slowly. If you gulp down water in a hurry, a large amount of air goes into your body along with it. This can cause bloating and gas.

Make sure you drink at least 8 glasses of water every day by spacing them out wisely during the day.
