NEW DELHI: The menace of spam calling appears to be growing steadily, finds the latest Truecaller Insights Report. Spammer targeted 18% more people in 2019 than in 2018, increasingly in developing parts of the world. Though Brazil displaced India from the No. 1 spot as the most spammed country, Indians received more spam calls in 2019 than in 2018.
Spam calls, texts on the rise in India
In 2019, an Indian mobile user received an average of 25.6 spam calls per month. This is 15% increase from 2018, up from 22.3 per month per user. Also, a user receives an average of 61 spam text every month.
Globally, there were 26 billion spam calls identified by Truecaller in 2019. In 2018, it identified 8.6 billion spam texts.
The US remains among the most spammed country — 1 in 6 Americans falls victim to a scam call. In 2018, the country lost $10.5 billion to phone scams. A previous report by Truecaller pegged the savings from ignoring spam calls at $414 million annually for India.
